Steve: Your bag looks loaded today.

Steve: Mike, you can't do that - it's stealing!

Mike: Don't take it so seriously Steve. It's just a few pens and some paper. The company has heaps left.

Steve: That's not the point Mike. You shouldn't steal from your employer!

Mike: But it's not like stealing from a shop, is it?

Almost everyone has taken something home from work that they shouldn't have. Staff say that they take pens and paper home because everyone else does!

Taking something from work without asking is stealing. Although it may seem small to take pens and pencils, it is still stealing and you could get in real trouble if you are caught.

Companies will usually let you take stationery supplies home if you ask and if you need to do work at home. It's a good idea to bring them back when you have finished though.

Remember the stationery is the company's property - not yours. Every year, staff lose their jobs because they are caught stealing.

It's better to be safe than sorry and not take anything home without asking first. Who wants to lose a job over a cheap pen and some paper?

If you see your colleague taking stationery home, you should warn them of the consequences or they may not be your colleagues for too long.

Before Occupational Health and Safety laws, most companies paid little attention to the health and safety of their staff. The laws punish companies severely if an employee hurts themselves at work if the company did not do everything they could to make the workplace safe.

OH&S is a responsibility of the HR department. The HR department should have a written OH&S policy that all staff should be told about when they join the company.

If you work with computers, you should rest your eyes and hands for at least five minutes each hour. If you don't, you could damage your eyes and develop a problem called Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in your wrists.

For people who have to lift heavy things, the company should show you how to lift properly so that you don't injure your back. Pay close attention to OH&S policies to protect yourself from serious injury at work.

OH&S also involves having a comfortable chair and proper desk to work at as well as having a good keyboard if you do a lot of typing.

Remember, work is important, but your health is even more important!
