Talking about a person of decency, the first man popping into my head would be Mr. Zeng who happens to be my teacher. He is polite not because he greets people in the morning, but because of his true respect for everyone. You know, most teachers in China, as they are invariably superior intellectually, would despise those holding different opinion with them. It is true when they face their colleague, and it is no less true when they confront their student. They often tend to criticise the student if he/she has an opposed idea about some issue. Yet, Mr. Zeng is completely different. He is such a gentleman that he respects all the ideologies he meets. When talking about the westward movement, he would ask us of our opinions. One of my classmates said the Movement was doing more harm to the diversity of American culture than shaping it. The entire classroom then was filled with scorn. However, Mr. Zeng did not. He calmed the class, and asked the student the reasons of saying so. After the reply, he admitted that it was such a great idea which may change the history of history and that he would take this ideology as a fraction of his teaching content next semester. That's when I realized that what true politeness is. Mr. Zeng showed me that kind words and compliments are not indicators of politeness. Instead, it is the respect for people especially people's way of thinking that paves the road for the grand hall of gentleman.

This is an interesting question. I know a bunch of people who have really good manners. On top of my list though, is this guy I met in high school. What was his name...um Chris. That’s right. He was a foreign teacher from the united states, and I studied under him for a year. What’s great about him was that he never made me feel uncomfortable in any way in our English conversations. As someone who had been struggling with English speaking, I must say that’s very impressive. You know how intimidating those conversations can be. Well actually you wouldn’t know because English is your mother language. But anyone in China with the experience of learning English as a second language knows how difficult it is to create an environment in which Chinese students feel comfortable speaking.

He did it with his politeness and the respect he showed to every student, whether they were good at English or not. He was very successful in making us feel confident around him. For example, what he usually do is he would see you coming from a mile away and start waving his hand, walk towards you and raise his tone of voice to suggest that he was pleased to see you. No one thought he was acting either, because he wasn’t faking his passion for his students. Another thing that he used to do during conversations is that he would lean forward just a little to pay attention while you talk and he would nod his headonce in a while to show that he understood what you said.

I think being polite is all about showing respect, and Chris is an exemplar in showing respect to people who might otherwise feel dwarfed by his presence. I couldn’t have possibly covered all his polite behaviors but those are the two things that I have noticed.

2.主题:约翰

3.故事线:一个善良、有礼貌的人,说话总是小心翼翼,从不伤害任何人,他会根据自己的情况做承诺,且从不会违背自己的承诺。

My meeting with John was an exceptional event. After my acquaintance with him, I felt like I met the most polite man in my life. He truly is a man of gentle nature. He is kind and loves to meet with people and help them in their needs. Though he needs to suffer for his politeness, he is unable to give up his natural habit. This is a nice cue card task for me and I am happy to have the chance of describing him.

I came to know about John in my university. He is the only person who came to my help when I was in a dire need of support. In fact, I lost my class diary and a pen on my way to the university and it was John who helped me with his own pen and shared his notes. Later, I came to know that he had a single pen that he gave to me and he did not write a line on his exercise book for the want of a pen. When other students were busy with them, he came forward for my help selflessly. It was his politeness that made me amazed.

John is polite in every sense. He never makes any rude remarks to anyone while others find it interesting to make statements on other's troublesome situations. Moreover, when someone is in distress, it is John who moves ahead before everyone else. His speeches are well constructed and he always carefully tries not to hurt anyone with his speech. He is unable to say something against any rude remarks to him and remains silent in this situations. He is well-known both for his gentle nature and talent.

I am highly glad to have this person on my friend list. In fact, he is a model for everyone to learn courtesy. He never breaks his promises and makes promise considering his ability. So, I like him very much for his politeness and other qualities.

3.故事线:我的叔叔在和别人交谈时,他是非常谦虚的。此外,他是个很好的倾听者。他从不打断别人。当我和他谈话时,总是感觉很好。

Well, the most courteous man I know is my uncle, who’s my father’s little brother. We are pretty close. He’s only 10 years older than me and we always hang out together. He’s well educated, I mean, he just got his doctoral degree. He’s been to a bunch of formal occasions, and he’s quite familiar with social etiquette.

Here are some few examples:

Whenever he’s out with someone, he’s always properly dressed. I didn’t get why he would go through so much trouble to “impress” others, but he explained, the whole point was not to impress, but to show respect.

And he’s super modest when talking to others. Besides, he’s a good listener. He never cuts others off. It always feels good when I have a conversation with him.

And he’s extremely polite when interacting with waiters and taxi drivers. He would say thank you many times after he’s been helped.

On top of that, he pays attention to small details in our daily life, like knocking on doors before entering a room, holding the door for others behind him, and holding the elevator when he sees someone rushing to the door.

So you see, he’s really a nice person, and he’s a good influence on me. Spending time with him has helped me become a better person.

地道用词

Courteous = polite, especially in a way that shows respect此处就是为了替换一下polite,例如:

a courteous young man

The hotel staff are friendly and courteous.

Etiquette = the formal rules of correct or polite behavior in society or among members of a particular profession如果感觉记忆有难度的话,说social manners也OK.

A good listener = somebody who you can rely on to listen with attention or sympathy就是我们常说的“很好的聆听者”。

Cut somebody/something off = to interrupt somebody and stop them from speaking,例如:

My explanation was cut off by loud protests.

On top of that = also, additionally, moreover. (Wiktionary) 不过也有一种用法是强调用于列举一堆不好的事情的,例如The Free Dictionary给出的解释:in addition to the bad thing already mentioned,例如We missed the bus, and on top of that it started raining.

高分句型:He’s been to a bunch of formal occasions, and he’s quite familiar with social etiquette.

On top of that, he pays attention to small details in our daily life, like knocking on doors before entering a room, holding the door for others behind him, and holding the elevator when he sees someone rushing to the door.

How you met the person

2.主题:马修

3.故事线:马修是“我”的中学同学,他对人很有礼貌,总是对人们说谢谢,哪怕是最轻微的事情。

Ok, right then, well the person I’d like to talk to you about is a very good friend of mine called Matthew, the reason being that he must be one of the nicest and most polite people I know, which I’ll come to explain in a moment.

But firstly, as for how I know him, well we’ve basically known each other since middle school, because we were in the same class together, and we still see quite a lot of each other. You know, if I feel like going out and doing something, I normally give him a call and see if he’s free to meet up.

And moving on to why I think he’s so polite, well it’s basically because he’s just got really good manners. And just to give you an example, he always says thank you to people, even for the slightest thing. For instance,I’ve noticed that whenever we’re eating at a restaurant, he will thank the waiters and waitresses every time they bring a dish to the table. And another example would be that whenever he gets off a bus, he will always say thank you to the driver, which a lot of people probably think isn’t necessary, but I’m sure the bus drivers really appreciate it, as do the waiters and waitresses, because it’s not all that often they hear people thanking them!

So yeah, that’s basically why I’d say he’s such a polite person, and I’m just trying to think if there’s anything more to add, um……, oh yeah, and one other thing to mention would be that he’s always very complimentary to people. So what I mean is that he tends to always say nice things to people, for example he might make a comment about how nice someone’s looking, or how good their cooking is, which I know might be seen as being a bit um,…what’s the word……um… insincere, but I think he genuinely means what he says, at least most of the time anyway!

And I mean, I can’t remember a single time when he’s ever been rude or unpleasant to anyone, and I also can’t really imagine him being nasty to anyone either.

So yeah, that’s pretty much it then. Thanks for listening.
