信号词一般可分为4种：
1、听力题目中出现的信号词
这一类信号词最为重要，它是指那些变化很少，且在文章中不易被同义转换的词，比如人名、地名、时间等。这类词汇无特定范围，需配合雅思听力中的细节定位法来使用，是考生破题最直接有效的手段。
2、语篇中的信号词
在语言运用中，在意义上相互联系的词会同时出现。当我们遇到其中一个，便会自然联想到这个词汇链中的其它词。比如我们听到deposit就会联想rent，进而联想到之后可能出现的water bill、gas bill等。通过这些词语就能连起句子，进一步了解文章的结构脉络。
3、听力原文中的逻辑信号词
无论说话还是写作，都会有一定的篇章逻辑，这些逻辑是以相关的逻辑词加以连接的。雅思听力的出题思路也是按说话者的逻辑顺序来的，掌握了这些逻辑词，我们就能以最快的速度找到答案。比如正确答案常会出现在in addition to、therefore、since、but、consequently、thus等这些逻辑词之后。
