在十月革命时候，有大批俄国人辗转流落到上海，这道汤，就是从俄式红菜汤演变而来。“罗宋”这一名称就是Russian soup的中文音译(罗宋即Russian，源自早年上海的洋泾浜英语，发音：[lùsó?])，Russian Borscht(Borshch)是另一常用的名称。
罗宋汤在满洲的一些地区也称为“苏伯汤”(源自俄语：суп，转写：sup， 意为“汤”)。
其实归根究底，罗宋汤是发源于乌克兰的一种浓菜汤。罗宋汤大多以甜菜为主料，常加入马铃薯、红萝卜、菠菜和牛肉块、奶油等熬煮，因此呈紫红色。有些地方以番茄为主料，甜菜为辅料。也有不加甜菜加番茄酱的橙色罗宋汤和绿色罗宋汤。
