  Dear Colleague:

As Dean of the Faculty of Law at the Beijing University, probably China’s best higher learning institution, I am pleased to have this opportunity to recommend Ms. Xia Chongbai to you for acceptance into your law school.

I taught Ms. Xia in two of the courses that I have offered, the finance law of China and the international finance law, and had therefore many opportunities to observe her performance in her undergraduate years. A diligent student, she scored an average grade of over 80 on the 100-point scale, excelling most of her fellow students in her studies. In a strict grading system like ours, this represented a remarkable achievement.

Independent and intelligent, Ms. Xia exhibited exquisite analytical and organizational skills in both her coursework and beyond. With a powerful aptitude for languages, she is articulate in both English and Chinese. Although her English had much to be desired when she first entered into the university, she quickly improved it as she moved into upper years. Her English proficiency became so good in her third year that she won the rare opportunity, as one of the department’s ten chosen students, to take the course “American Administrative Law”, which was taught only in English by a visiting professor from the Columbia University law school. She passed the exam in that challenging course easily and achieved a grade of over 90, once again proving her intellectual caliber as a top student.

Upon graduation, she joined the Legal Department of the China South Industries Corporation, one of the country’s leading foreign trade companies. I was delighted to learn that she was practicing what I had taught her in class. I understand that she has been continuously improving both her legal expertise and English proficiency since her graduation. In 1993, she enrolled in the part-time program of Master of Laws in my faculty and now expects to be conferred her degree soon.

Now, sophisticated as a professional and mature as an individual, she has set her sights on still more advanced training, which she hopes to receive in your famous university. I understand this greatly appreciate it if you could favorably consider her application. Should I be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

  Yours sincerely

  to whom it may concern:

in the capacity of chair professor of the department of management, having instructed mr. xiao ming in the course of primary management during the academic year of 2006~2007 and the course of operating research last year, i am pleased to have this opportunity to introduce him to you.

i have known mr. xiao ming since 2007, when he was a fresh student in the class, as i was the instructor of their primary management. mr. chen’s enthusiasm for and diligence in learning helped him become one of the most outstanding students in that class, making a strong and positive impression upon me. his passionate participation in discussion during class sometimes enlightened the whole group. and he was one of the few students to successfully pass the final exam of that subject, which was so difficult that quite a number of his classmates failed in it.

last year i have been selected as the instructor for the course of operating research. as mr. chen has finished his study in the management class with a high rank and chosen the course of operating research as his major, i have had the opportunity to know this young man better. his excellent performance in class has continuously recalled those brilliant discussions two years ago to my mind. what’s more, his creativity and capacity for analytical thinking have also convinced me that he improved himself a lot during his junior year before he returned to my class. in addition, he has demonstrated explicitly his potential as a researcher to me. through the personal communication between us he has also expressed the desire to attend a postgraduate program and do research work of higher quality in the academic field that he is interested in. i think his only weakness is that he still needs more experience for real research work, for as an undergraduate he has limited time and energy to receive enough training for specialized research. however, i believe a talented and hardworking young man like him could swiftly find the best way to develop his research work.

mr. chen is ready to move on to a more rigorous program of graduate study. his academic performance and upstanding personal character have won him my highest recommendation, and i hope you give his application strong consideration.

  your faithfully

I am pleased to write this letter for my former student Miss Nan Li, who graduated from this College with an L.B. degree in June 1978.Miss Li was admitted to the Department of Law of this College in 1974 through highly com#petitive entrance examination which is conducted annually and is open to the whole nation. Even in such a selective group. Miss Li made herself distinguished. As professor and dean of the College, I have access to her records of academic work and moral conduct, In her fourth year study, I instructed her in Anglo-American Laws on Trespass. So I have known her quite well. Miss Li’s performance, like that in many other courses she taken, was excellent with a superior grade of 86 for the first semester, and 84 for the second semester. In our university and in other university here, 80 is considered "A" , the highest level. As far as I know, Miss Li wishes to continue her study in Law for an advanced degree. I am sure she has had sufficient prerequisite knowledge for the subject and certainly has the ability to undertake the st udy. I recom#mend Miss Li without reservation and shall appreciate your favorable consideration of her application.
